South Pasadena Station

Of the first 13 Gold Line stations built by the Construction Authority in 2003, the city of South Pasadena is home to Mission Station – arguably, one of the most beautifully completed stations on the line. Located at Mission Street and Meridian Avenue, the station sits in the heart of the city’s commercial district and has become an integral part of the area’s landscape.

In addition to developing a transit plaza adjacent to the station that is used throughout the year for community events (such as a weekly Farmers Markets and summer outdoor movie series), the city of South Pasadena also decided to spend city funds to augment the budget for station art and design. Known as “betterments,” the city’s investment resulted in upgrades to the baseline materials used on the platforms, landscaping, lighting and more.

About the Artist

Michael Stutz began his journey as a public artist creating temporary recycled cardboard installations. His first permanent public sculpture was for the W Hotel adjacent to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Since then, he has completed a number of public commissions in cities throughout the United States including Portland, OR, and Salt Lake City, UT and is currently working on pieces in Jacksonville, FL; Richmond, VA; San Jose, CA; Ventura, CA; and San Francisco, CA.

Astride-Aside”: A larger-than-life walking man stands as an icon atop formidable granite cubes at the entrance to this station. Made of annealed bronze strips that have been welded over a supporting armature to create a woven latticed form, the figure represents a unique community that is determined to move forward in its own distinct way. Situated in a corner vest pocket park that adjoins the station, the scale of the 10-foot figure with its familiar posture creates a looming presence over the area. The figure accentuates the pedestrian nature of the Mission Street area, and encourages commuters to disembark and visit the diverse shops and restaurants within walking distance of the stop.

Artist Statement
“This artwork is a celebration of everyday life, emphasizing movement and direction in an ever-changing urban world. It reinforces the very human nature of the site, and symbolizes a community assuredly growing with proud individuality.”

About South Pasadena

Centrally located in the West San Gabriel Valley, South Pasadena is known for its tree-lined streets, historic California Craftsman-style homes, unique small businesses and its outstanding public schools.

It sits astride historic Route 66. The Mission West district is one of Southern California’s more charming shopping areas and is frequented by artists, students, celebrities and designers and looks much the same today as it did in the early 20’s and 30’s. This small town atmosphere makes South Pasadena one of California’s most desirable locations.
